Virtual Lifestyles

well as we are mainly reviewing alot of our semester at this stage-i thought i would show you a girl that i happen to come across quite a few years back and became quite attuned to her.

Her name is Messy Stench funny i know but as with alot of other people over the years the only way she has mainly become known is through the internet.

I was a so called 'friend' in some instances way way back a few years ago-no i had never met her but we used to chat regulary online when she was still rather young on sites such as 'ratemyface' and so on.

As time goes on you loose contact with people (especially online) and i ceased visiting the site where we would have our chats. Then i decided a few years on to see what she was up to?-so i decided to google her. And lo and behold up came a huge array of sites-prodominetly though messystench.com and craptabulous.com - one being her portfolio of images and drawings and the other based around the vouyeur aspect of watching her via web cam and purchasing items. And it turns out at this stage she now had her own radio show (quite a few now) and was mingling with all the top people in the alternative world...this totally facinated me!!!-its unbelievable what people can achieve in a few years online.

Yeah sure to become popular you arent going to achieve it just on face alone-its all about image and what people want to be like-shes rude and crude and people love that!-shes not ashamed of herself and draws on this through her fan basis.

I suppose you could say alot of the internet is all tits and arse with a flicker of dirt and crud which i think is fine-why not-she hasnt exploited herself-shes no slut in the 'slut' term-she's herself and look where she is-travelling known worldwide-people hang around all day just incase she comes home at a certain time and they may catch a glimpse of her in her home setting (this is what her site craptabulous.com is based on-web cam interactiion) and others also donate money so her site can keep going-i think its awesome.

go and have a look for yourself www.craptabulous.com/ im sure you will get hooked.

and the amazing thing is there are thousands of other women and men around the world that have profited and gained fame through the same means.

The internet is an amazing space.

Protocols

The week just gone during our lecture we discussed the importance of Internet Governance and use of Protocols.

While there is a lot going on to who exactly has the power and if in fact as consumers we have lost all our rights (so much is controlled by those who run the site-non personal).

Today whenever we join up to a site we agree to read and abide my the huge list of things required before ticking the yes button and concluding with registration..It makes me wonder who actually reads the entirety of those lists-because I know I sure as don't...Its basically scroll to the bottom tick yes and keep on going.

This HUGE list of things that we are 'supposably' to read and agree to are what known as protocols-rules you are agreeing to follow as a member of that community/site. These are created by the sites admin to help run a smooth and legal website-which is totally understandable. If you agree to follow these protocols and then violate them you can be banned from the site and in drastic cases may even face legal authorities.
These lists of protocols and rules were created to insure the safety of other members as well as to those running the site.

Its all rather complicated and leads to all sorts of questions and arguments-such as where is the power?-who has control?-and how does this relate to our community and society as a whole...Is this what its going to be like in every day life eventually?-before entering shopping centers etc you have to sign protocols and rules that you are to follow and if not-you will be banned and refused entry?

Its quite interesting in the long run-but also is one that can be really frustrating and confusing and I realise its causing me to waffle on quite a bit...

places you can visit to see those at the top of the ladder and their policies....Are the ACMA (Australian Communication and Media Authorities)

' pc="'INTERNET,tlp=">Internet'>http://www.acma.gov.au/ACMAINTER.65654:LANDING:1240250499:pc=INTERNET,tlp=INTERNET"">

from this same area you can read on about their other policies as well...

"network achitecture is politics"

(ps-sorry about repeating myself 1000 times.... *meep* )

Virtual Community Report

The community I have been apart of for the last few weeks has been elffinarts.com http://www.elffinarts.com/
Although I have been apart of this site for longer than this time it has since changed and therefore I had to re-subscribe.

This site was created by a friend of mine Mark Greenmantle as a place for people in Brisbane to come together and discuss issues regarding art, photography, community interests and social activities. Although it was formally created in 1993 as his own place to display his work it soon grew into a well established community. So far the total amount of members are sixty one, although the most who have ever been online at one time have been ten. There is a limited amount of information that is disclosed through their profile and mainly consists of their age, name, location, number of posts, a small avatar, email if desired and a link to their personal website.
The size of the site I feel this is due to it being a largely Goth Brisbane based online community, and due to it being known through word of mouth. Most of the people who chat in the forums and who are seen in the gallery spaces all know each other fairly well, this is why many of the people continue to stay on the site as it works as an indirect chat program, keeping them up to date and connected to one another.

The community consists of forums (1954 articles have been posted so far), galleries from social functions, galleries for other members to display their work and discuss it, links for models, bands, medieval events etc...

The aim of the site was to encourage connections between artists, and helping to develop their skills, abilities and creative talents.

I feel that it is a fairly successful community especially due it being so local. Brisbane isn't a very large city and the Goth artistic community isn't that huge either, so even though it isn't exclusively for these people other artists haven't come across its benefits just yet due to it being so new (updated), but give it time and it will definitely flourish.

Finally-but never ending+TSWK

Well i have finally finished most of my assignments i can get back to my blog-i havent had time to even scratch myself due to essays, working and organising my exhibition that finished on sunday and went really well... Posted a little pic for you to see the night... (will do when my computer isnt being such a bastard!!)

and just as i began to relax i was hit in the face with sickness i thought i had escaped!!!

Anyhow as uni is still going on strong its still never ending...i have been catching up on my readings and looking through some other blogs and online communities i have left behind due to health and other commitment issues.

Reading about fan sites and the growing number of 'spoof' sites dedicated to huge corporate/music/movie/film areas was quite intereseting.

In particular the fan culture surrounding star wars-im not too sure if anyone else has seen the amatuer film that a little fat kid has created and become famous for-as 'The Star Wars Kid'...(TSWK) http://www.ebaumsworld.com/starwarskidv.html well here it is for your viewing pleasure...i have to say Attack of The Clones is my favourite.

is quite funny and i really admire his effort but all i could think about was some kid in his bedroom going nuts to create this and imagining walking in on him during the middle of his showdown...*rofl*

All together i think that the fan sites are a great area for people with similar interests to meet and share thoughts and ideas on different areas=i know i have benifited from fan sites more so than the actual sites of bands. One of My favourite bands Garbage now requires subscription to enter most parts of their site which i feel is a little crap-and as a student without a credit card (and knowing the debt i would get in if i had one) i cant access areas that i really intereseted in-instead i have to look elsewhere-and hope that their facts are honest.

So go and watch the fella dance with his saber...its great entertainment.
